Shopping for CDs in New York

The stores in Manhattan with the largest selection of classical music recordings are:
  - HMV: Lexington Ave. at 86 St., Fifth Ave. at 46 St.
  - J&R Music World: 25 Park Row (across from City Hall park)
  - Tower Records: Broadway at 66 St., Broadway at 4 St.
  - Virgin: Broadway between 45 and 46 Sts., Broadway at 14 St.

Tower has the largest selection; HMV and Virgin are next in size; J&R has the smallest selection.  There are other Tower and HMV locations, but the ones that I have visited have small classical music sections. J&R usually has the lowest prices.  The other stores charge about the same price, although there may be some differences.  The differences are greatest when a store has a sale on some labels (for example, EMI or
Sony) or on all labels. Tower has a clearance outlet at Lafayette and 4 Sts. (one block east of the Tower store at Broadway and 4 St.).

For used LPs and CDs try:
Gryphon Record Shop at 251 W. 72 St. Mainly LPs

Academy Records & CDs at 12 W. 18 St. Great for used CDs

J&R at Park Row across from City Hall complements Tower well as the buyers seem to find different merchandise.  If you are sightseeing and a good walker, walk from Tower down to City Hall and detour to the east side of Broadway between Houston and Canal Streets to go through Little Italy and China Town.  Great
places for a meal. HMV at Lex and 86th is a distant 3rd (or 4th, if you count both Towers).  It's not worth a visit if you hit the other two or three, though it does have imports.
